This is especially true for school taxes when a land user, such as a warehouse, doesn’t contribute any school children to the school district, but pays a significant amount in school taxes, sometimes 140 times more than an average residential property.įor example, in 2019, the Staples warehouse on Bracken Road paid $833,000 and the Home Depot warehouse on Neelytown Road paid $778,000 in school taxes.Īccording to Orange County Department of Real Property, there are approximately 6,600 residential properties in the Town of Montgomery, including its Villages, who each paid an average of $5,900 in school taxes in 2019. When there are more businesses located in our town, the tax burden for current residents and small businesses is reduced because the total assessed value for the Town is increased. The lion’s share of our school budget is funded by property taxes. However, I am completely bewildered why some residents want to close the Town of Montgomery to new businesses with a building moratorium. I understand why VCSD taxpayers are unwilling to increase the school budget, I am also a taxpayer in the Town of Montgomery. While this practice is earth-friendly and a great way preserve school budget money, it’s not encouraging for our young, burgeoning athletes when they play in grubby, falling apart uniforms. Typically, the Junior Varsity team receives hand-me-downs from the Varsity team, and middle school team re-uses uniforms each year. The uniform’s condition was not because my daughter played basketball for a long time, it was only her second month on the team, but because the Valley Central School District cannot afford to purchase new uniforms for its athletic teams. Last month, as I mended my daughter’s middle school basketball uniform, I realized the side that was supposed to be white (it’s reversible blue- and white-sided) was grayish due to its age.
